Sharon and I may be a little behind on this, but we heard a song by the guitar duo, Rodrigo y Gabriela, on KFOG and promptly bought an album … their latest … “Live in Japan.” It’s really hard to describe the music precisely, but we both found it, in a word, amazing. It’s some of the most mind-blowing guitar work I’ve ever heard: incredibly technical AND beautiful. It evokes flamenco in that it’s performed on classical guitars with high-speed rhythms hammered out on the guitar bodies, but is usually described in reviews as Latin tinged fusion of a variety of styles, notably including speed metal. When Sharon and I heard it, we thought of very high-energy flamenco with beautiful melodies and runs and intricate picking. The percussion (again, all on the guitars) is amazingly complex and powerful. Anyway, check it out. Their stuff is on iTunes and Amazon, and you can listen to some full length songs on their myspace page. You’ll be glad you did.

Loved this shot of Jay on a recent weekend. He was much more interested in a side game he had going just before the “kick-off” that happened a few seconds earlier: pretending to be an airplane.

Joan’s Farm
Originally uploaded by shutterjunky
We recently joined some friends and drove to Livermore to check our Joan’s Farm and their pumpkin patch. We had a great time and, as you can see, Lucy fell in love with a lot of pumpkins before we selected one to take home. Lots more pictures posted on flickr and on the Photo Page, including a bunch of sunset shots from some of the spectacular Bay Area sunsets we’ve all been enjoying in October.

Sunset BBQ at PinecrestOriginally uploaded by shutterjunky
I’m finally catching up on pictures after a somewhat crazy month. We had our first Lair of the Golden Bear experience at Pinecrest at the end of August and we are sold. Truly a perfect vacation for families. The setting is beautiful, the activities are a blast, and the accommodations are generous and comfortable. Add to that the Go Bears spirit and awesome staff, and you have a vacation you would have to work very hard NOT to enjoy. We will be back every summer if possible. More pictures available on flickr. You can dig into the 2008 Travel Photos set to see them on the Photos page.
An administrative note for my (one or two
) regular readers:
The way my Photos page is set up, the Recent Photos link will show you the photos based on the date they were taken, not the date they were uploaded. So you’d need to click through and look back in history a bit to find the Lair pictures and other family pictures from the summer. Or you can go to the relevant sets. I like the chronological feature so I don’t want to change it, but if you want to easily see all the pictures I’ve uploaded most recently, my flickr photo stream is organized in that way … so you can click through to flickr to check it out.
Also, you may be wondering about the sets with seemingly random pictures of play structures and parks, usually featuring kids but not always Jay or Lucy. Those sets (like “Rockridge Scenes”) are all part of a “Neighborhoods” collection and are all done for Bay Area Parents magazine – East Bay Edition. One or two of the photos from each of those sets has been or will be published in the magazine. If you’re curious, let me know and I’ll send you a link to the magazines.
